But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.

  • This is not a good movie or film

    By jmlucke
Please spend your money on something else. The Incredibles 2, Back to the Future, SpiderVerse, Jumanji, or some current movie. Now I did not pay to see this movie; though, I’ve seen it. It has been out long enough that’s its on TV. I was mildly curious about it when it came out but was afraid because I am familiar with the book. I am not a huge fan of the book though it is fine. I don’t want to compare how the book is different than the movie though it is. The issue with this movie without any major spoilers is that it is jarring in regards to the animation and bland dialogue wise. The protagonist’s delivery is plain partially because the conversations in movie seem forced. Now this is a action movie which is a fine genre; the issue is that the action in this movie takes place in a animated world and often the cuts are harsh back to the real world. This creates a unsettling uncanny valley effect. The other issue is the action often goes nowhere; undeveloped characters interacting with or just looking at something that only exists to check mark some nostalgia box. While this movie contains many pop culture references they end up feeling pointless, out of place, and shallow. While, some people might say the Spielberg references are great; if they were Spielberg fans they’d be disappointed with pacing and plot of the movie. It is hard to understand why this movie has a good rating; it is likely that as time goes on opinion on it will shift if it is even remembered at all. I’ve called Ready Player One a movie because that is how it is being marketed as Spielberg going back to his popcorn eating popular movie making roots, and I want it to be clear that it is bad on the “let’s watch a movie just to kill time kind of level”. As a film, this movie would be considered absolute garbage; so if your looking for a film go watch Ikiru, African Queen, Green Book, or a film you’ve watched before. As a final note, I gave it 2 stars because it’s not even a so bad it’s good kinda of movie.

  • Which book was referenced?

    By mercuryestqueen
Ok, so I understand why some of the things in the book wouldn’t fit well in a two hour and ten minute movie, but somethings, like the PAC-MAN game where Wade got the quarter and Ultraman (which wasn’t in the movie either) would have been as good of a way to end the story as was shown in the movie, and would have been more faithful to the book that it was supposedly based off of. I was overall disappointed. With Steven Spielberg and Ernest Cline for letting his amazing book be turned into this monstrosity. It was an entertaining, action-packed movie, but if you are looking for a movie-version of the book Ready Player One, you’ll be disappointed.
  • One of the worst movies I’ve watched in years

    By beeeeeeeto
The plot does not make sense. The pacing of the movie is horrible. The characters are so transparent. The book is on my top 10 for entertainment; however, the movie does not follow one bit of the book. Do yourself a favor and read the book it’s 100 times better. I was really excited for this movie but for the first time in years I was left angry after watching a movie.

A good film that won’t force you to think too much. More could have been done with the material, which is why I gave 4 stars instead of 5. AMAZING special effects though.
  • A Big Delicious Dose of Nostalgia

Ready Player One collects everything that was great about growing up in the 80s and blasts it onto the screen in all its glory. It both makes you look back in delight at where gaming has been and also forward in anticipation of future gaming technologies yet to come. I only wish it was longer so we could get even more story elements from the book, which you should also definitely check out. Overall, this movie is an absolute blast.
